FEDERAL MEMBER FOR JAGAJAGA

“I believe that the work we do in Parliament often seems to be at its most effective when we – the people’s elected representatives – move ourselves away from being the centre of the story.

When we listen, open ourselves up to conversations, and give voice to the people whose stories have not been heard.”

– Kate Thwaites MP

Kate is the Federal Member for Jagajaga and the voice in Canberra for our local community. She lives locally with her family and is passionate about supporting people across Jagajaga.

Kate understands the pressures that families, households and local businesses are facing, including the cost of living. As your local voice in the Federal Government, Kate has been advocating for much needed support to help relieve these pressures, as well as stronger local healthcare, and boosting secure employment.

A working parent with two young children, Kate is a strong advocate for a quality education, access to more affordable child care and paid parental leave.

Kate understands we are facing a climate emergency.

The urgent need to act on climate change is one of the biggest issues consistently raised by residents across Jagajaga.

That’s why Kate is proud to be part of a Government that is investing in a job-creating renewable energy future, reducing emissions and protecting our local environment.

As Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, Kate has advocated for greater transparency in politics and getting big money out of politics as part of well overdue reforms. She is proud to be part of the Government that delivered the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

Kate is also focused on how Government can address social inequality across Australia and providing affordable housing for those who need it most.

She believes that older people who helped build this country deserve to be respected and cared for, and is proud to be part of the Federal Government as they undertake important work in fixing aged care.

As a former ABC reporter Kate understands how vital it is that we have a strong and properly funded public broadcaster. She will always fight for a strong and independent ABC.

Kate has written and spoken about the need for a fundamental cultural shift in the way our national Parliament works; to make sure women are safe and their voices are heard in our Parliament.

“Labor started making it easier for parents to juggle work and family when we introduced Paid Parental Leave. It has made a huge difference in the lives of many Australians, but there is more work to be done…

We need to tell a new story about the important role that men can play as carers at home, so that men who want to take that opportunity feel that they can do so – without being viewed as a ‘unicorn’.”
